Bagel Bistro Moving Across Street

The Bagel Bistro will move across the street this winter, ending a two-year search for larger quarters.

The restaurant, caterer and wholesale bakery will move into the Downtown Crossing space recently vacated by the Bangkok Thai Restaurant, aiming for Feb. 1, owner-executive chef Stephen Chitow said today.

The Bagel Bistro has rented space at 72 East Main St. for nearly 16 years, starting May 15, 1997, Chitow said.

The new site offers the business a full kitchen; 50 to 60 seats, compared to 19 now; and space for a breakfast case, he said.

"Eventually, we’re going to open for full breakfast on the weekends," starting in March, Chitow said. The restaurant currently opens Monday through Saturday.

“There’s a reason why we’re not open on Sunday: because most people are looking for a full breakfast on Sunday. We were originally open on Sundays, but it was kind of a break-even thing for us.” 

The Bangkok Thai Restaurant recently closed permanently at 57 East Main St. because the business was less successful than owner B.B. had hoped, attorney John Matson said last Friday.

Meanwhile, Chitow said he had sought to move his three businesses for “about two years."

“We really need more space,” he said.

“We really wanted to stay in town. And when this opportunity came, we jumped right on it. We knew that there was nobody there. So, we contacted the owners of the building. They said they wanted to re-lease it.”

Chitow said he now needs permits. After that, some remodeling is necessary.

The site is “great for us, because we’re going to be on the right side of the road for the morning commute," he said.

"We’re going to have bigger space. We’re going to be able to offer more products,” he added.
