Goldblatt: 'How Lucky Have I Been?'

By request of a Westborough Patch reader, we share this forum to leave messages for Selectman Lydia Goldblatt who announced yesterday that she will not be running for a fifth term on the board.

, there was a hush in the room. For many, it was hard to imagine a town meeting without her sometimes funny and sometimes blunt comments. For 24 years, Goldblatt has been a fixture at lengthy tables on the School Committee, Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen.

“My dad said, ‘You want to go out when people still want you to stay,’” she told Westborough Patch the morning after her announcement.

“The biggest part I’ll miss is being in a position of helping people,” she said.

Goldblatt also recalled fondly the many people that she had an opportunity to meet and include in her life, including Sally Gibbons, Jack Dougherty and Ken Sutton. “There are so many, some are here and some are deceased…just unbelievable people.. the fire chief, police chief, DPW manager, just all great people. It’s been a privilege to work with them all.”

She recalled that it was guidance counselor Mary Callahan who first suggested Goldblatt consider a run for school committee. “I was a room mother then. I ran in ’86 and lost. Then I ran in ’87 and won,” she said.

Goldblatt has three daughters, all raised in Westborough, and two grandchildren. “How lucky have I been? I mean, really, how lucky have I been? I have great friends, I love my daughters, I’m in great health,” she said. “I’m going out with the same friends I came in with.”

Goldblatt currently serves as the Deputy State Director for US Sen. Scott Brown, R-MA. When asked if she will ever run for office in the future, she said, “You never know.”

Longtime Westborough teacher and resident Clark Masters posted a comment on Westborough Patch asking if Westborough Patch could set up a forum for readers to leave comments thanking Lydia Goldblatt for her service to the town. And, that is what we are doing here. Please use the comments section below to send your wishes to Lydia Goldblatt.
