Worcester County Lands in Bottom Half of 'Healthiest Counties' List

Among Massachusetts' 14 counties, Worcester County was listed ninth healthiest.

Worcester County placed a lackluster ninth place in a list of the healthiest counties in Massachusetts, as determined by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In its recent "County Health Rankings and Roadmaps," study, the foundation looked at a variety of measures that affect health, including the rate of people dying before age 75, high school graduation rates, unemployment, limited access to healthy foods, air and water quality, income, and rates of smoking, obesity and teen births. Nearby Middlesex County placed second in the list, trailing only Dukes County. Below Worcester County (of which Westborough is part) were Plymouth, Berkshire, Bristol, Suffolk and Hampden Counties.   The Massachusetts State Police plan to conduct sobriety checkpoints in Worcester County on Saturday, May 19 into Sunday, May 20. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," said Colonel Marian J. McGovern, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, in a press release. UPDATE: The National Weather Service canceled this warning at 8:21 p.m. Taunton, MA - At 7:33 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, the National Weather Service (NWS) updated the flash flood warning in effect for southeaster Worcester County and central Massachusetts, including the Westborough area. The warning remains in efffect until 8:45 p.m. According to the NWS, at 7:27 p.m., “Doppler radar indicated that the largest cluster of thunderstorms had tracked east of the warning area. However, radar indicated another thunderstorm producing locally heavy rains that is expected to track over locations that had already received heavy rain. Westborough Under Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Watch

The National Weather Service issued Tornado Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all of Worcester County until 8 p.m.

Just before 1 p.m. on June 1, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Tornado Watch for most of Massachusetts, including Westborough, until 8 p.m. The watch includes all of Worcester County. The watch area stretches from southeastern Pennsylvania to Maine until 8 p.m. There is a chance of tornadoes, hail of up to two inches in diameter, thunderstorms, wind gusts up to 70 mph and lightning.
