Blood Drive Supports Marathon Tragedy Victims

Westborough's Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has raised about two-thirds of the total cost of three maintenance projects. The church wants to repair its second floor, replace the sanctuary roof and repair its parking lot, according to an e-mail Thursday to members and supporters. The church has received $64,685 in pledges toward its $100,000 goal, the e-mail noted.

On Memorial Day, Westborough’s 2013 grand marshal will share his pride in the community. Air Force Col. Brent French said his Memorial Day message will be “number one, I’m so proud of Westborough for putting on this kind of event. It says a lot about our community and what our values are. “And number two, I want to talk about what Memorial Day means to me. It’s a solemn day. But also, I think the people that we’re honoring on Memorial Day would want us to do two things. I think they would want us to be together as a community. Frozen Yogurt Shop Coming to Bay State Commons

A frozen yogurt shop plans to open at Westborough's Bay State Commons. The Snow Bowl's plans were approved by Health Inspector Terry Gilchrist in April, she told the board of health in her April inspection report. Gilchrist said she also discussed the plans with Snow Bowl owner Ken Kim. The Snow Bowl would be Westborough's third frozen yogurt shop. IYogurt plans to open at the Westborough Shopping Center, at 30 Lyman St. Gilchrist said she has approved the plans. Fruitti Cup opened at 31 South St., near the Westborough rotary, last summer.

Lightning Knocks Out Power to About 2,600

A lightning strike near National Grid's Milk Street substation Tuesday night knocked out power to about 2,600 customers in Westborough and Upton, National Grid spokesman David Graves said today. The strike happened around 5:52 p.m., Graves said. The 2,600 without power included 70 in Upton. The outage stalled an elevator at Liberty Mutual, 114 Turnpike Road, with one person inside, and Westborough firefighters helped get them out around 6:19 p.m., the fire department said. Reader Bob Smith Tweeted to Westborough Patch that CVS Pharmacy on East Main Street was without power around 6 p.m. Graves said about 375 customers had their power restored at 6:42 p.m. Another 1,670 were restored at 6:55 p.m., and the remaining 520 were back at 7:58 p.m…

Liquor Store's Tobacco Permit May Get 7-Day Suspension

HighPoint Wines allegedly has sold tobacco products to under age customers twice this year.

The Westborough Board of Health may suspend a Connector Road liquor store's tobacco sales permit for seven days for selling tobacco products to customers under age 18 twice this year. The board agreed Tuesday night to put HighPoint Wines' suspension on hold until its June meeting, and ask the Worcester Regional Tobacco Control Collaborative if it used someone under 18 and using a Massachusetts driver's license into HighPoint Wines to try to buy a cigar and cigarettes on April 11. Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said HighPoint sold cigarettes to a minor used by the collaborative on Feb. 26. HighPoint owner Devinder Rekki paid a $100 fine, per the board's regulations, McNulty said. The second alleged violation within 12 months …

Event Planning Firm Moves Into Larger Space

It's one of two new Westborough leases announced.

A Westborough-based event planning and trade show firm has moved into larger quarters on Otis Street. Corporate Communications' agreement for 19,087 square feet of warehouse space at 27 Otis St. was among four leases for Westborough sites recently brokered by Richards Barry Joyce & Partners, LLC, a Boston-based full-service commercial real estate advisory firm. The locations total 276,932 square feet, the real estate firm said in a recent press release. Corporate Communications moved from smaller space on Old Flanders Road, President Bob Dobinski said Tuesday. The firm's lease was among two new ones announced by Richards Barry Joyce & Partners, both at 27 Otis St. Columbia Tech has begun leasing 68,135 square feet of warehouse space there…

Strong Thunderstorms Expected This Afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement.

Enjoy this beautiful day while it lasts. The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement, warning of the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon. According to the statement, the conditions will exist between 1 and 4 p.m. Tuesday, created by a cold front that is moving south. "Some of the storms may produce strong, damaging wind gusts and hail, in addition to lightning and heavy rainfall," the statement said. The region affected includes most of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, but especially near the Massachusetts Turnpike.
