IMAGE GALLERY: Local Musician Performs on Homemade Ceramics

Barry Hall, a nationally recognized expert in the field, was commissioned to author the book “From Mud to Music.”

Residing in Walnut Creek, California in the 1990s, Barry Hall took an adult education class in ceramics and “thought that pottery was cool and I naturally gravitated towards making instruments out of clay.” Hall, who now lives in Westborough, met with Westborough Patch to discuss his collection of home-made clay instruments and the music he performs on them. One of his first creations was the “flower-pot-o-phone," a large instrument resembling an oversized xylophone, yet made entirely of clay flower pots. Hall and his wife, Beth, and their fifth grade daughter, Avery, eagerly performed a selection on the “flower-pot-o-phone," demonstrating the use of rubber super-ball headed mallets to strike the clay pots to produce a melodic sound. Hall …

Local Couple Featured on NPR

Barry and Beth Hall surprised to learn NPR promoted their medieval holiday music CD.

Barry and Beth Hall met over twenty years ago while touring Poland with a string orchestra. Beth recalls that "music brought us together." The pair became involved in medieval renaissance music when they lived in San Francisco, shortly after they were married. "The CD started as a musical Christmas card," Barry says, telling Westborough Patch that throughout the 80's the pair began an annual tradition of recording a medieval holiday song on cassette to send to friends instead of a greeting card.  After years of recording individual songs, the Halls decided to make a compilation CD. They perform all of the vocals on the CD and also play various instruments including violin, viola, vielle and many others. Barry remembers sending the CD, …

Westborough Teen Sells His Book on Kindle

Michael Colbert’s “Misadventures in Filgersville," in print for 2 years, is now available for the Kindle e-reader.

Publishing a book might have been enough for most kids. Seeing it on the shelf at the bookstore, sharing space with Roald Dahl and Andrew Clements, may have fulfilled writing dreams. But not for enterprising Westborough High School junior Michael Colbert. At age 16, two years after the print release of his book Misadventures in Filgersville, he has pursued national and international exposure by releasing his book digitally for the Kindle e-reader.  Colbert showed Westborough Patch the original notebook where he handwrote the first draft. "The idea just came to me, I'm not exactly sure how, but it's based on stereotypes in middle school."   Colbert said the main characters include, "Chris the dumb jock and Melvin the tutor nerd who needs to…
