It's School Vacation Week; Get Out There and Enjoy It

Ice cream stands are open, trees and flowers are blooming and spring sports are in full gear. It’s also time for the Westborough school’s spring vacation week from April 16 to 20.

  It's spring school vacation next week and the weather is warming up, making it perfect for some outdoor fun. Here are some ideas to explore the area and enjoy some family time together. Baby Animals and Hikes: Spring brings new baby animals. Sturbridge Village is expecting newborn lambs and has a full calendar of fun activities for vacation week. They are planning special Patriots Day activities on April 16. Also, If you arrive before noon on April 13, admission is only $5. The Massachusetts Audubon Society also has great nature centers and trails to explore. Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, MA and Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester, MA are close by. Celebrating Makeda

Westborough family embraces their adopted daughter's Ethiopian culture and holidays.

When Tom and Laura Gilmartin of Westborough returned from Ethiopia on Valentine’s Day, 2009 with their newly adopted five-month-old daughter Makeda, they had a special reason to celebrate the holiday of love. It was the beginning of a lifelong celebration of their new daughter and her Ethiopian heritage. Today, the Gilmartins, including their children Anthony (21), Gabriella (19) and Nick (14) observe important Ethiopian holidays in addition to the more traditional U.S. holidays. The most notable Ethiopian celebrations include Timkat (Epiphany) in January, Victory at Adwa Day in March, and Enkutatash (New Year’s Day) in September. “Makeda is an Ethiopian New Year’s baby,” said Laura. “We learned from her relatives that she was born around …

Local Author Signs 'The Blind Pig' at Tatnuck [VIDEO]

Elizabeth Dougherty is scheduled to share her first published book at an event in Westborough.

Local author Elizabeth Dougherty is holding a booksigning for her new, and first, book, The Blind Pig, on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Tatnuck Bookseller in Westborough from 1 to 3 p.m. Dougherty will do a reading from The Blind Pig, talk a little bit about the book and answer questions. Then, she’ll be selling paperbacks for $10, signing them and mingling.
