Schools Collect About $10,000 in Owed Activity Fees

A ConnectEd e-mail and phone call went out last Friday evening.

School officials have collected about $10,000 in Westborough High School and Gibbons Middle School activity fees in recent days, Director of Finance and Administration Irene Oliver told the school committee Monday night. Last Wednesday night, WHS Athletic Director Johanna DiCarlo told the board that unpaid activity fees would affect the Nov. 26 winter sports tryouts. Students with outstanding balances are not allowed to participate in future fee-based school activities until that sum is paid. The current fee is $200 per activity, with a $500 family cap. DiCarlo’s comments were part of a bigger discussion about students with outstanding fee balances participating in school activities, and collecting those fees. DiCarlo and Coordinator of …

I don't think anyone likes the fees, and the schools are not making out on this. But they are most likely here to stay. I'm told they are much higher in surrounding communities. Unpaid Activity Fees to Affect WHS Winter Sports Tryouts

Fee collections are “getting a little bit better. But, the reality is, we have put in that students cannot participate in the next event if they have an outstanding balance,” DiCarlo said. “And that’s where it becomes – speaking for myself – very difficult for me. We’re about to end the fall season and start the winter season. And I’m not sure what the number is, but it’s a pretty big list that came across my desk the other day of kids that haven’t paid yet.” DiCarlo’s comments were part of a bigger …

Committee Approves Increase in Student Activity Fees

Family activity fee cap to hike 170 percent.

When the Westborough School Committee agreed to a FY13 budget proposal at its Dec. 14 meeting, the panel agreed to implement fees totaling $210,000 in an effort to hold down expenses. This week, the board approved various ways to raise that money, that largest of which raises school activity fees. “This is a way to maintain the quality of our school system,” said member Ilyse Levine-Kanji. The five members unanimously approved raising the school activity fee to $200 per activity, with a family cap of $500. Beginning in the 2012-13 school year, the fee will be in place for each activity involving fine arts, athletics and clubs. Currently, all middle and high school students participating in one or more extracurricular activites are …
