New Cemetery Plans Begin With 5,000 Lots

That's enough to meet Westborough's needs for 50 years.

The initial development plans for a new Westborough cemetery on Nourse Street would provide space for about 5,000 graves, meeting Westborough's needs for 50 years, town consultant Stephen Doret told the planning board Tuesday night. Doret and Public Works Manager John Walden discussed the project with the board informally. A public hearing on the town's request for an earth removal permit was continued to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 because the abutters were not notified, Chairman Lester Hensley said. Doret said the permit would allow public works crews to begin creating roads, "with limited clearing," at the cemetery. Much of the excess soil would stay on the site. New Westborough Cemetery OK'd

Westborough’s newest cemetery has moved closer to developing. Tuesday night, the board of health approved the Nourse Street site after a public hearing with engineer Stephen Doret. The cemetery is planned for about six acres of about a 32-acre site owned by the town, Doret said. The entire property was originally 44 acres, which the state bought and made part of the state hospital site, he said. A restriction allows Westborough to own the 32 acres as long as a cemetery is planned there, Doret said. “The other cemeteries in town have a limited number of years,” he said.
