Annual Christmas tree fundraiser from the Civic Club helps a locally organized nonprofit for US troops.
The Westborough Civic Club donated $400 to Touchdown for America, a nonprofit program recently organized by Westborough High School sophomore Max Silverman. The group collects supplies, calling cards and gift cards and sends them to troops serving overseas. “These men and women sacrifice every day for me and the freedoms I have, so I want to honor their service and selflessness by giving back,” said Silverman. The Westborough Civic Club donation was made from the proceeds of the club’s annual Christmas tree sale on East Main Street. All of the proceeds from that sale are donated to local causes. This year, Touchdown for America became a beneficiary of the Westborough Civic Club fundraiser. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to …

How do you feel about the decision to pull troops from Iraq?
With Veterans Day just a week away, the country is preparing to welcome home an estimated 40,000 US servicemen and women serving in Iraq. On Oct. 21, President Barack Obama announced the end to the long and costly war in that part of the Middle East, saying that the troops will be home by the end of the year. "After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over," he announced. “Personally, I’m glad they are coming home,” said Westborough Veterans Agent George Perry. “But there is a possibility that it is bad. I mean, Iran is sitting there waiting to jump into Iraq.” Critics of the pullout share that opinion, many saying that the US is handing Iraq over to Iran and leaving open the possibility that US troops may have to return. …
US Rep. Jim McGovern, D-MA, whose district includes Westborough, reacts to the president with skepticism.
US Rep. Jim McGovern, D-MA, was quick to react to President Obama’s announcement tonight to withdraw 33,000 troops from Afghanistan over the next year. “The drawdown of American forces that the President announced tonight is insufficient,” McGovern said in a statement. “The president is right that we need to shift our strategy in Afghanistan. But a counter-terrorism strategy doesn’t need 70,000 boots on the ground, any more than it needed 100,000 boots on the ground. What the president needs to tell us is how – and when – he’s going to bring all the troops home.” McGovern, whose district includes Westborough, has been leading a fight to pull troops from Afghanistan. In a press conference on May 5, he introduced the Afghanistan Exit and …

According to a statement from his press office, the plan does not restrict “the President’s authority to attack al-Qaeda forces wherever they are located.: The amendment narrowly lost, with 204 votes in favor and 215 votes against After the vote, McGovern commented, “Today’s strong bipartisan vote represents a huge step forward in the effort to bring the war in Afghanistan to a close. I hope the President recognizes that there is a growing consensus in Congress and the country …
