Rangers Girls Hit Fed Cup

The Westborough High School varsity girls tennis team rubbed elbows with the sports' greats.

  Photos courtesy of Arielle Sigel.   The Westborough High School Rangers varsity girls tennis team was at the DCU Center in Worcester on Wednesday to help at the Fed Cup. The players served as community volunteers at the Fed Cup Kids Fest Day, part of the festivities preceding the weekend matches. The team operated and managed several instructional and activity stations during Kids Fest. The girls were chosen from a number of volunteer applications to help at the event. Among the dignitaries scheduled to join the team were the Williams sisters and Gov. Deval Patrick.

Girls team to help at Fed Cup Kids Fest Day.

The players will serve as community volunteers at the Fed Cup Kids Fest Day, part of the festivities preceding the weekend matches. “This is a rare opportunity to rub elbows with some of the greatest players in the game while perhaps igniting some future interest in the sport from some children who might not otherwise be introduced to tennis,” said Coach Mary Schwartz. The Williams sisters, winners of Olympic gold and a number of singles and doubles titles in Grand Slam events, will be joining the Rangers team in working …

Rangers Rank High in Tennis, Community Service

WHS girls varsity tennis a perfect match of talent and teamwork.

There’s a lot to cheer about with this year’s Westborough High School girls varsity tennis team. The Rangers just qualified for the state playoffs and are the undefeated leaders in of the Division 1 Mid-Wachusett B league. They’ve been undefeated Mid-Wach B champions for the past three consecutive years. “Our team this year features an exciting combination of returning veterans and strong newcomers. It’s a very special group of girls,” said coach Mary Schwartz. Schwartz, an avid tennis player and long-time competitor, has been coaching the team since 2009 and is optimistic about this year’s outcome. Seniors and team co-captains Leah Callery and Jess Wilson are four-year veterans of the team and are playing first doubles. Junior Ali Strand …
