Fans Support Local Girls Ice Hockey Team

The team of Shrewsbury, Westborough, Wachusett and St. Peter-Marian students held an electronics fundraiser Saturday.

Fans (and TVs, and monitors) coming to the Shrewsbury High School parking lot Saturday supported a multi-school girls ice hockey team. The Shrewsbury High team's first electronics fundraiser in two years was designed to help pay the students' expenses, co-captain Samantha DiReda said. The event is the group's only fundraiser, she said. The team is open to Shrewsbury students in grades seven to 12, and Westborough, Wachusett Regional and St. Peter-Marian high school students. "It's expensive," DiReda said. "Some players can't even play because it was $1,000 last year." Saturday's event raised about $5,000, team member Melanie Borglund said. Shrewsbury High Throws Support Behind WHS Program For Troops

Touchdown For America is in its second year.

If heading to next Saturday's Westborough-Shrewsbury high school varsity football game, bring a toothbrush. A soldier will receive it. Shrewsbury High School has begun supporting the Touchdown For America program inspired by an essay that Westborough High junior lineman Max Silverman wrote two years ago. This year, the program's second one, both schools are collecting donations of supplies for care packages for troops. Collection boxes are at each school and during their home football games. And fans are asked to bring donations to two varsity football games: Westborough at Shrewsbury, at 2 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 13, and Nashoba at Westborough, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.
