The third annual Africa United Day featured dozens of countries and attracted scores of visitors.

  The cafeteria of Mill Pond School was transformed into a tour of Africa Thursday morning as 94 sixth grade students presented Africa United Day. Each student was dressed as a prominent figure from one of Africa’s 55 countries and showcased his or her research with maps, food, reports and more. “These kids put a lot of hard work into this and it shows,” said Westborough resident Anthony Badway as he was leaving the exhibit. This is the third year for the program presented by the Fireflies Team, a group of four sixth grade classrooms. WHS Hoops Tournament Spotlights Breast Cancer

The 10th Annual Westborough High School Girls' Basketball Invitational Tournament continues today.

  On Sunday afternoon, the Westborough girls’ basketball program gave area hoops fans a taste of the postseason a little early. The 10th Annual Westborough High School Girls’ Basketball Invitational Tournament kicked off with a handful of local squads battling it out in what will be the final tune-ups before the sectional tournament brackets are announced later in the week. While locals will be treated to some top notch girls’ high school basketball this week, they are also helping to fight one of the most deadly of diseases. Once again this year, the tournament is teaming up with the WBCA (Women’s Basketball Coaches Association) and taking part in the Play 4 Kay event, raising  money and breast cancer awareness. Rangers Honor Late WHS Hockey Player

“We brought the shirts out of the archives and the kids wore them to school in remembrance of Shawn.”

  On Wednesday night, the Westborough High School hockey team and its fans paid tribute to one of its own. Prior to the Rangers hockey game against visiting Oakmont Regional at the North Star Youth Forum, the squad held a moment of silence in remembrance of Shawn Marks. Marks, a 1988 graduate and a member of the Rangers hockey program, tragically passed away on February 15, 2002 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident the day before. He was 31 years old. Wednesday night marked the tenth anniversary of that horrific night. “I think Shawn represents a real passion for the sport of hockey and working hard and bringing a strong work ethic,” said Westborough Amateur Hockey Association president Sue Rolfe. “One of the things we do is we…

Hastings Welcomes Public to Winter Festival

And, yes, there will be a cake walk.

  Information courtesy of the Hastings Parents Group.   The 5th Annual Winter Festival at Hastings Elementary School, 111 East Main St., takes place on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Hastings Parent Group, features games, crafts, food, live music, a silent auction, basket raffle and more. Activities for children include face painting, a free throw contest, a bounce house, sand art and the famous “cake walk.” There will also be a magic show by Munsey’s Magic. The basket raffle and silent auction items a Kindle Fire, a Bose SoundDock II, the 2012 American Girl Doll of the Year, a Keurig coffee maker and a kids’ bicycle. Rangers Girls Hit Fed Cup

  Photos courtesy of Arielle Sigel.   The Westborough High School Rangers varsity girls tennis team was at the DCU Center in Worcester on Wednesday to help at the Fed Cup. The players served as community volunteers at the Fed Cup Kids Fest Day, part of the festivities preceding the weekend matches. The team operated and managed several instructional and activity stations during Kids Fest. The girls were chosen from a number of volunteer applications to help at the event. Among the dignitaries scheduled to join the team were the Williams sisters and Gov. Deval Patrick.

Kindergarten Registration is Open

Families may choose between two schooling options.

The deadline to register is Feb. 29. Tennis Team Scores Opportunity at Fed Cup

Girls team to help at Fed Cup Kids Fest Day.

The players will serve as community volunteers at the Fed Cup Kids Fest Day, part of the festivities preceding the weekend matches. “This is a rare opportunity to rub elbows with some of the greatest players in the game while perhaps igniting some future interest in the sport from some children who might not otherwise be introduced to tennis,” said Coach Mary Schwartz.   "I truly believe that these [National Honors Society] kids are our best and brightest... If they saw someone in need, they would stop and help," Westborough High School (WHS) Principal John Smith told Westborough Patch. Smith and the four officers of the WHS Chapter of the National Honors Society (NHS) awarded one senior, 17 juniors and 25 sophomores certificates and pins at an induction ceremony on Monday night, Jan. 30. Before the ceremony, Karen Apuzzo Langton, a business teacher at WHS and advisor to the NHS, explained that acceptance into the society is based on scholarship, service, leadership and character. According to the public job posting, the position is four hours on each weekday, for a total of 20 hours a week. Salary, benefits and responsibilities will be decided between the Westborough School Committee and the School Lunch Employees.
