The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) begins an overhaul this week of all signage at toll plazas on the Turnpike, Tobin Bridge and Airport Tunnels to improve safety and meet federal highway guidelines. Drivers will see the Fast Lane signs come down and E-ZPass signs go up; Cash Only signs will also be updated as part of the project. “Driver hesitation and confusion can jeopardize safety at our toll plazas,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey. “We want the general public and our 1.7 million transponder holders to know that E-ZPass and Fast Lane are now one and the same.” Purple and white E-ZPass signs will be familiar to most because the brand exists on toll roads in more than a dozen states, including Maine…

Snow is still an issue on Route 495 as of 8:30 a.m.
At 8:30 a.m., the Massachusetts State Police reported that road conditions are expected to improve as the temperatures start to rise. However, commuters are urged to use caution, especially on Routes 495, 190 and 2 where there are reported problems with snow covered roads. Two accidents near the 5:00 p.m. hour tie up travel.
The evening commute on Westborough Interstates was slow this afternoon. Two different accidents on Route 495 southbound, both reported around 5 p.m., put the intersections of Routes 9, 90 and 495 in a gridlock during the 5 p.m. hour. The first accident reportedly took place near exit 23, the intersection with Route 9. Two people were taken from the scene by ambulance. The second accident was reported to be on Route 495 southbound in Hopkinton, near the Route 85 intersection. According to scanner reports, Westborough firefighters responding to the first accident then tried to get to the scene of the second accident but found traffic to be gridlocked.
