The school community is preparing for Westborough High's 10-year accreditation.
At Westborough High School, “our students identify with Rangers. We talk about being a Ranger, what it means to be a Ranger, the value of that,” Principal John Smith says. Now, "Rangers" is an acronym for Westborough High’s core values, which the school community developed, while “refining the current ones,” as part of its 10-year accreditation review, New England Association of Schools and Colleges Steering Committee Chairman Roger Anderson says. Responsibility, Achievement, Innovation, Growth, Engagement, Respect and Self-Reflection are “found in department mission statements,” Anderson told the school committee last week. “We brought the shirts out of the archives and the kids wore them to school in remembrance of Shawn.”
On Wednesday night, the Westborough High School hockey team and its fans paid tribute to one of its own. Prior to the Rangers hockey game against visiting Oakmont Regional at the North Star Youth Forum, the squad held a moment of silence in remembrance of Shawn Marks. Marks, a 1988 graduate and a member of the Rangers hockey program, tragically passed away on February 15, 2002 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident the day before. He was 31 years old. The players served as community volunteers at the Fed Cup Kids Fest Day, part of the festivities preceding the weekend matches. The team operated and managed several instructional and activity stations during Kids Fest. The girls were chosen from a number of volunteer applications to help at the event. Among the dignitaries scheduled to join the team were the Williams sisters and Gov. Deval Patrick.
