IMAGE GALLERY: Blind Drag Racer Visits Westborough

Jay Blake, a blind race car driver, visited the Porter and Chester Institute to speak to students.

Jay Blake lost his vision more than a decade ago, but that didn't stop him from doing what he loves.  When Blake isn't working on his team's NHRA race car, he travels the country motivating students with speeches on positive thinking.  Blake and his team visited Westborough's Porter and Chester Institute on Tuesday night to talk to students and share his story.

Trade School Visitors Send Troops Holiday Greetings

The Porter and Chester Institute hosts its 2nd Annual Winter Fun Fest on Saturday.

A metal elf waved to visitors to a Westborough trade school Saturday. And a few rooms away, Santa Claus posed for digital photos. The Porter and Chester Institute's campus at 129 Flanders Road resembled a Santa's workshop during the school's 2nd Annual Winter Fun Fest. Several classrooms featured holiday displays. Youngsters also were encouraged to create greeting cards for the troops.

That's terrific that the kids made holiday cards for the soldiers. We did the same thing yesterday at FasTracKids and they came out great! I hope they bring some holiday cheer to those wonderful men & women.   more ›

The Porter and Chester Institute's two Westborough campuses are serving as drop-off locations for the first time,

New, unwrapped toys are being welcomed at a technical school's two Westborough campuses during the holiday season for the first time. Monday, the Porter and Chester Institute's schools at 129 Flanders Road and 80 Turnpike Road began serving as Toys for Tots Foundation drop off locations Monday, Director of Education Glenn Hartland said Tuesday. The sites will accept donations from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. until Dec. 14. "We want to try and give back, and hope to be able to help a family or a child that's in need," Hartland said. Hartland said he contacted Toys for Tots about this. He and his family had supported the program for a few years. "We already have two gifts so far" at the Flanders Road location, Hartland said. Meanwhile, Porter and …

Military Appreciation Day Salutes Sacrifices

A tradition started at he Porter and Chester Institute on Saturday.

Saturday, five soldiers visited Westborough and noted their rank, their community and their deployments. "Thank you for everything that you do for us," Porter and Chester Institute Westborough Director of Education Glenn Hartland told them. "You are the men and women that help to keep us free." The institute's first Military Appreciation Day should be a time to "think about the sacrifices that our men and women are making, especially in this state," said Earl Bonett, Massachusetts vice chaiman of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. In Massachusetts, there are 44,000 people in the National Guard and Reserve, "and they're all ready to make that ultimate sacrifice which many of you in your daily lives are not expected to do. They …

Area Teams Prepare to Walk for Cancer Awareness

Westborough's Porter and Chester Institute among the groups participating Sunday.

Some students at Westborough's Porter and Chester Institute have promoted cancer awareness through posters around the campus, Career Services Advisor Tanya Kowalczyk says. Sunday, a Porter and Chester team of about 30, including about 12 students, takes several other steps, literally, to support the fight against cancer. The team will participate in the 14th Annual UMass Medicine Cancer Walk, at 10 a.m. at the UMass Medical School, 55 Lake Avenue North, Worcester. A Porter and Chester team will participate for the second straight year, Kowalczyk said today. "Watching the students get excited" is her favorite part, she said. Last year's walk was "awesome. An inspiring, fun day," Kowalczyk said. "We just had a wonderful time last year," she …
