Beaton Helps Bring Balance to Beacon Hill

The state representative for Shrewsbury, as well as Westborough Precincts 4 and 5, starts his second term this winter.

As he prepares for his second term, state Rep. Matthew Beaton says his presence at the State House “helps to bring a little bit more balance to the unbalance of power that exists.” Beaton says he’s among 29 Republicans among 160 state representatives. “It’s basically one-party rule where things just get rubber stamped when leadership wants it. And our government wasn’t designed to operate in that fashion. A balance brings healthy government,” Beaton says. Beaton was unopposed on Nov. 6 for re-election to a second two-year term representing the 11th Worcester District, which consists of Shrewsbury as well as Westborough Precincts 4 and 5. “I look at it as a general affirmation that the majority feels that I’m at least doing a fair job,” …

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Know the Candidates

She supports Cavaretta, Levy, Lamb and Beaton.

To the Editor: Do you know who is running for state Senate to represent Westborough? Do you know who is running for state representative in your precinct? At the present time, in the state Senate there are four Republicans, and 36 Democrats. In the House of Representatives, there are 33 Republicans, and 127 Democrats. Over 80 percent of Democrat legislators vote more than 90 percent of the time with their Speaker. This leads to a predetermined outcome of most bills before they are even introduced, and a promiscuous dose of power to the Speaker! Is it a surprise that we have a serious problem with abuse of this power and corruption leading to the indictment of the last three Speakers? Too many bills are not transparent and available for you…

As a result I have proven another thing, this is why Dykema refuses to sign the clean campaign pledge. This is what she and her surrogates do. He speaks for her, is a mouthpiece for her. She should condemn what he is doing and saying, otherwise, that means she is condoning it. It's a shameful act. It would have been easier to ask for recommendations on what puppy would be a great addition to the …   more ›

Patrick Signs Compromise Electricity Bill

Beaton served on conference committee.

Gov. Deval Patrick today signed into law a compromise bill designed to "strengthen many of the renewable energy programs that were created in the Green Communities Act," state Rep. Matthew Beaton (R-Shrewsbury) said. The Act Relative To Competitively Priced Electricity In The Commonwealth also seeks to take "further steps to protect the best interests of the ratepayer and taxpayer," Beaton, whose district includes Westborough precincts 1 and 4, said in a press release. Beaton served on the conference committee for the bill. "The bill addresses the high cost of electricity in Massachusetts in an effort to support job creation and economic recovery. It seeks to reduce the price of electricity by identifying cost-drivers, reviewing rates on a…

Westborough Reps Propose Restored Local Aid

A provision added to the state FY12 budget seeks to provide one-time funding for cities and towns in Massachusetts.

A local aid amendment was included in the final version of the FY12 state budget. Both Westborough legislators George N. Peterson, R-Grafton, and Matthew A. Beaton, R-Shrewsbury, were part of the House Republican Caucus to propose the amendment, which seeks to restore one-time local aid to cities and towns. “We are very happy our Democratic colleagues joined us and supported this important local aid initiative this year as we take a step closer to the benefits of two-party balance and bipartisanship,” said Peterson. The caucus filed and passed the amendment during the House budget debate in April. A six-member conference committee composed of members of the House and Senate included this local aid language in their compromised version of …
