  1. On Monday, Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon reported a string of recent house break-ins. He advised residents to report any suspicious activity or vehicles by calling the department at 508-366-3060. 2. Westborough selectmen had an informal conversation with Town Moderator Joe Harrington this week about ways in which to make Town Meeting more efficient and attractive for voters. A number of ideas were suggested, including limiting the amount of time that a resident can speak. 3. Library: Can Your Fines, Literally

The Westborough Public Library announced a new way to get rid of fines on your account.

  Information courtesy of the Westborough Public Library.   Westborough residents who have past due fines can pay them off with a donation of canned food items. The program begins on Feb. 1 and will continued until the end of the month. The Westborough Public Library’s CAN your Fines program will allow library patrons who owe library fines to receive amnesty. The CAN your Fines program is only for fines. Charges for lost or damaged materials or other fees will not be forgiven. Donated food must be non-perishable and up-to-date on expiration. All food donations will be delivered to the Westborough Food Pantry.

Cardiologist to Discuss Women's Heart Health

She will be speaking about her new book on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, causing one in three deaths each year. Police and fire departments each say that things may not be as they appear.

  1. Longtime Westborough Public Library caretaker Mike Matley may be receiving a pink slip after 23 years of service to the town. In an effort to reduce town spending, Town Manager Jim Malloy has proposed replacing three fulltime custodial positions with an overnight contract cleaning company. The proposal includes cutting Matley, which some feel may be a costly mistake. Westborough Patch spoke with Matley and Malloy to find out how the decision might impact taxpayers. 2. Mike Cashman decided not to run for School Committee in the Spring Town Election. Earlier in the month, he took out nomination papers at the Town Clerk’s office. Longtime Library Caretaker to Be Cut

Proposed budget cuts remove the man who made the Westborough Public Library the love of his life.

  Sixty-year-old Mike Matley has been caring for the Westborough Public Library for the past 23 years. He was initially brought on to the staff as a custodian, but his job grew into something much more – both professionally and personally. An expert on the intricacies of the 103-year-old building, Matley serves as a caretaker, treating the building as if it were a second home. “There are 755 light bulbs in the library,” Matley shared. “I keep an inventory.” Giving a tour of the building, he pointed out the furniture that he built, displays that he organized, the indoor basement garden that he tends and the collection of stuffed birds that have been an attraction near the Children’s Library for as long as most can remember. “I always wanted…

Perhaps something else to consider is why are these 3 town custodial positions being attacked when the school system employees 42 custodians. Surely a ton of money could be save in that budget if the town hired a cleaning service for the school department.
