Campaign Notes: Three Candidates Share News

The latest from the Eldridge, Cavaretta and Lamb campaigns.

State Sen. Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) visited the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Westborough last Wednesday. He spoke to residents at the rehabilitation and skilled nursing center about his positions on issues, including state and federal funding for nursing homes.   The Beaumont is part of the Salmon family's independently-owned health and retirement homes across Central Massachusetts.   State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) said today that he would appoint Dean Cavaretta (R-Stow) to serve on the legislature’s Joint Committee on Education if Cavaretta is elected to the Senate in November.  Tarr said that Cavaretta’s experience as an educator and his passion for strengthening education qualify him for …

Dykema and Eldridge attended a "meet and greet" in Westborough. Lamb marched in Celebrate Holliston Parade.

On Sunday, state Sen. Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) and Rep. Carolyn Dykema (D-Holliston) held a "meet and greet" at the home of Ilyse Levin-Kanji and her family, organized by Ilyse and Westborough Selectman Tim Dodd, to talk to Westborough residents about their concerns, and to answer questions. Eldridge represents the Middlesex and Worcester District, and Dykema represents the Eight Middlesex District, which includes Precinct 2 of Westborough. Both are running for re-election. Ask Desiree how many, Mike. Twenty-five, she said. Bwahaha! As factually challenged as your comment. Where were you? Still in Acton? All kinds of people come up to Rep. Dykema and tell her they support her for the things she actually does, rather than the things you feverishly imagine she does. The one thing they all share and you don't, they live in reality. Oh, a second, they live in the …   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Letter: Why I'm Different From Jamie Eldridge

Send your letter to the editor to maryjo.kurtz@patch.com.

Dear Westborough Patch: Elections are about choices and contrasts. Here are four real differences between myself and incumbent Jamie Eldridge: What our District NEEDS is a more competitive, small business climate that entices all companies—in multiple industries—to stay in Massachusetts instead of leaving our state. My opponent has conducted the wrong strategy by attempting to pick winners and losers in the marketplace, by placing one, emerging industry above all the rest. By contrast, I have filed a broad-based, jobs and economic plan that establishes a more efficient and simpler system for our state tax code. It's time to end special deals for both "big oil" and failed, solar panel "boondoggles." What our District NEEDS is to restore …

Letter to the Editor

Letter: State Road Projects Are Taking Too Long

Send Letter to the Editor to maryjo.kurtz@patch.com.

Dear Westborough Patch Editor, Right now, the average time to deliver a road or bridge project owned by the Commonwealth is taking 7-10+ years. Completely unacceptable when one considers how important a safe, reliable and cost effective transportation network is to Massachusetts and to our economy. Over 15 years ago, I started my political career calling for drastic reform at our transportation agencies, including the acceleration of all Route 2 reconstruction projects. My first job working for MassHighway was on a mega-project in Worcester whose total budget exceeded Rhode Island's annual appropriation for snow and ice. Bringing performance based management, improved roadway maintenance and on-time project delivery - while reforming the …

The ABP pilot procedures are not the statewide road and bridge program. AASHTO and the 2006 MassDOT Design Guidebook published by the state note protracted timelines. We can do a lot better in a host of areas. The Wellesley job you referred to? Thanks, I worked on that innovative project and with stakeholders.   more ›

Letter: 'Influence Peddling is Bipartisan Problem'

Send Letters to the Editor to maryjo.kurtz@patch.com.

Dear Westborough Patch Editor, Considerable news coverage was granted last week (2/2/12) to liberal activists' attempt to convince Congress to change the campaign finance laws relative to the Citizens United decision and the Supreme Court. Like proponents, I also do not support Super-PACs, nor do I believe corporate influence with fundraising or campaign advertising is good for our political system. I salute Sen. Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren, for example, trying to remove some of these outside influences from their race.  But, there is another side to the campaign finance reform coin that State House liberals, including Jaime Eldridge, fail to mention: How can one rail against corporate corruption and influence in politics, only to …

IMAGE GALLERY: State Officials in Westborough to Honor Bob Durand

At MassWildLife in Westborough, Bob Durand, former state representative, state senator, and Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs, was given the Francis W. Sargent Conservation Award.

Gov. Bill Weld dove headfirst into the Charles River in 1996 after he signed the Rivers Protection Bill, authored by then state senator Bob Durand. A sportsman and spirited environmentalist, Durand dove in, too. On Friday, June 10, Durand was awarded the 2011 Francis W. Sargent Conservation Award at the MassWildLife headquarters in Westborough. About 100 people gathered in a tent on a hill above 800 acres of beautiful land controlled by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildLife). A four-term state representative and four-term state senator, Durand also sponsored the Brownfields Act (1998), co-sponsored the Community Preservation Act, and gave support to the Open Space Bond Bill. He was the Massachusetts Secretary …
