Sleigh Makers Once Prominent Here

Westborough once had as many as nine, during the late 19th century.

When Santa’s sleigh arrives in Westborough overnight, it will fly over the sleigh atop Westborough Town Hall. The weather vane symbolizes Westborough’s thriving sleigh making industry of the late 19th century. As many as nine sleigh makers operated here at one point, Westborough Historical Society member Kris Allen says. The industry’s height here was from the 1870s to about 1885, she says. “There was as many as about 4,500 sleighs produced annually in Westborough. And they were the ‘one horse open sleigh’ that is talked about in the song. They were lighter. That's why they could go faster.” “Carpenters and wheelwrights, in the wintertime, that’s what they would be doing.” Brothers William and Frank Sibley were among the most successful …

Don't Let Thanksgiving Leftovers Weigh You Down

Maintaining a healthy weight is all about portion sizes and planning ahead to balance your calories, says Framingham mom, registered dietitian and nutrition consultant Heidi McIndoo.

We all know the traditional Thanksgiving dinner is laden with calorie-dense foods. In fact, the average American packs in 3,000 calories at this one meal, far exceeding the recommended calorie intake for the entire day! According to the American Council on Exercise, a 160-pound person would have to run at a moderate pace for four hours, swim for five hours or walk 30 miles to burn off a 3,000-calorie Thanksgiving Day meal. And that’s just one meal! Holiday weight gain doesn’t result from overeating at one or two meals, but rather from feasting on leftovers for days or even weeks. I believe there is a way to continue to enjoy our festive favorites for days and weeks after the celebration. And we can do so while maintaining our healthy …

Walmart Pushes Back Black Friday Opening in Mass

The retail giant has already released its Black Friday sale circular online.

Shoppers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island will have to wait until after Thanksgiving to take advantage of Black Friday sales at retail giant Walmart including its Northborough store, near the Westborough line. While Walmart locations across the rest of the country will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Massachusetts and Rhode Island’s Blue Laws prohibit the store to open that early in those two states. Instead, Walmart will open at 1 a.m., which is also the time many other retailers, including Target, plan to open for business on Black Friday.  Shoppers don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to find out about the Black Friday sales at Walmart. The company already has released its circular for the sale.
