Health inspector fields two inquiries.
Two people considering opening frozen yogurt shops in Westborough contacted Health Inspector Terry Gilchrist last month. Gilchrist mentioned the calls in her January report to the board of health. Westborough has one frozen yogurt shop: Fruitti Cup, which opened last June at 31 South St.

The latest 'You Ask, Patch Answers' addresses that question.
Editor's note: In our column "You Ask, Patch Answers," we help you to find answers to your questions. Email westborough@patch.com if you have a question that you would like us to investigate. Today, we answer this emailed inquiry: I hear Fruitti Cup has closed. Is this true? Not completely. A sign on the South Street frozen yogurt shop door reads, "We will be closed during the following days. Tuesday, Jan 8th-Sunday, Jan 13th. REOPEN Monday January 14th. Thank you." Westborough Health Inspector Terry Gilchrist said today she spoke with owner James Ta on Thursday. Ta told her he was sick, and planned to reopen today.

It should arrive within a few weeks.
A new frozen yogurt shop's new sign is on order, following issues raised by Building Commissioner Tin Htway. "We're just waiting for them to make the sign now," Fruitti Cup owner James Ta said at the South Street shop. "Everything's good. We should have a sign within a few weeks." Htway had directed Ta to remove his sign from his shop, which opened in late June, or risk being closed. Htway noted the sign violated the standards for the historic district. Ta "has voluntarily removed the unpermitted sign and has applied for a new sign which has been approved by the historical commission for color and design," Htway said Sunday. "This department has not issued a permit for the new sign as of this date."

The frozen yogurt shop's sign has been ordered removed because it doesn't comply with town regulations.
James Ta received a call this week from a customer, asking where his frozen yogurt shop was located. The customer was calling from the parking lot. "I had to take down my sign because otherwise (the town) would have to shut down my store," said Ta, who opened Fruitti Cup on South Street at the end of June. "I don't know that it has hurt my business, but people want to know where my sign is." Building Commissioner Tin Htway ordered Ta to take down his shop's sign or face being closed. Htway said he was following town code, which states that new signs must comply with standards set for the historic district in which they are located. In this case, Fruitti Cup's bright colors are among the reasons it was in violation. Depending on who you ask…

The new shop, which offers frozen yogurt and smoothies, opened on South Street Friday.
If you want to give your new business a jump start, it can't hurt to open the day of a massive Block Party. It wasn't Bri Nguyen and James Ta's plan to open Fruitti Cup the same day as Westborough's 4th of July Block Party; it was actually a coincidence, Nguyen said. "It was a huge success," Nguyen said of the Friday opening. Fruitti Cup is the latest froyo spot to open in the MetroWest area, and the first to set up shop in Westborough. Nguyen and Ta, both of Worcester, said they loved the concept—which has moved to the east coast after gaining popularity in the west and the south—and did a lot of research before choosing Westborough. It is their first business. The self-serve shop, located at 31 South St., offers six flavors at a time, …

From the heat blazing on marathon runners to the blazing fire at Stop & Shop, there were hot stories in Westborough this week.
1. Nineteen of the 20 Westborough residents registered for the Boston Marathon took on the record-setting heat. Patch provided live coverage throughout the marathon, a photo essay of the day and official results of our Westborough athletes. 2. A fire from the rotisserie oven at the Lyman Street Stop & Shop this week forced the store to close on Sunday, April 15. Heavy smoke damage was reported and several fire departments were at the scene to bring the situation under control. 3. A string of home break-ins has Westborough detectives busy. A fingerprint led police to a Worcester man, who will be charged with breaking and entering into a home on Dover Way. Anyone with information on other break-ins, including this week’s break into a home on…

We really have a reputation of not being business friendly, Things like this only add to the bad wrap we have in the business community of being nit pickers and an overall pain to work with. Time to lighten up a bit with all of the rules and start to improve our image as a place to run a business.   more ›
