Then and Now: The Eli Whitney School

Every Thursday, join Sam Kurtz for a look at Westborough's past in his "Then and Now" column.

Built in 1898, the Eli Whitney School stands at 15 Grove Street. The building served as a school until it closed some time in the second half of the 20th century. (See our question below.) According to the YWCA Website, the YWCA purchased the building from the town of Westborough for $51,000 in 2000.  After raising an additional $100,000 from town residents, the YWCA was able to complete a series of renovations which allowed them to open for business. Today, as a daycare, the building once again hosts children - although they are several years younger than their fourth and fifth grade counterparts at the original Eli Whitney School. I thought the Eli Whitney School closed first, maybe 1968 or so, then the Harvey School closed when the Hastings school opened in 1970. Could be wrong, but I know my ex went to Harvey School, not Eli Whitney School, and she was WHS Class of 1981. I remember going to YWCA flea markets and also playing tennis at the new courts at Eli Whitney in around 1975, and the building still had blackboards …   more ›
