Officials Say Town Working Hard to Attract Businesses

Westborough’s three-year-old Economic Development Committee spearheads local efforts to boost local business growth and ease the tax burden placed on homeowners.

Even as persistently vacant retail storefronts and ever-rising residential tax bills frustrate some residents, Westborough officials say they are doing all they can to make the town more attractive and welcoming to businesses of all sizes.  “Westborough has worked and continues to work very hard to do all we can to bring businesses into the community,” said Selectman Tim Dodd. “For a very long time, we have had one of the highest percentages of businesses versus resident tax burden in the state. Town Engineer Cautions About Future Water Demand

The Economic Development Committee met on Tuesday, Jan. 4, and discussed the town's current water and sewer issues. Is the town able to support economic growth?

Every 10 years, the town develops a Master Plan which projects growth for Westborough businesses and residents. The most recent plan was completed in 2003. One reason government officials use this plan is to determine projected water and sewer useage. Carl Balduf, Town Engineer, gave a presentation at the Jan. 4 Economic Development Committee meeting. He explained the town's current water useage and how much is available for incoming businesses. Balduf also included information on the town sewage system. Westborough is joined with Shrewsbury and Hopkinton for wastewater removal and sewage. The three towns combined have a total flow capacity of 7.68 million gallons per day. Balduf said that Westborough is allotted 2.89 million gallons per …
