First Frost Doesn't End EEE Threat

Risk is 'way down,' though, health official says.

Westborough's EEE threat level remains at the state's highest despite the fall's first frost over the weekend, town Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said today. However, "the risk has gone way down," McNulty said. Westborough's parks, recreation fields and school fields have closed at sunset since Aug. 17 because the threat of Eastern equine encephalitis in Westborough was elevated to high on Aug. 16. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health elevated Westborough's EEE threat level to high, because human-biting, EEE-postive mosquitoes have been found here. The state raised the threat level to critical, its highest, one day after the state agency determined that a Westborough resident was Massachusetts' first reported death this …

I wonder if this type of threat is what we are to expect going forward? I've always hated mosquitoes; I didn't think it was possible to hate them more: now I do!   more ›

Westborough's EEE Threat Level Reaches Critical

It's the highest level in the state Department of Public Health's ranking system.

Westborough's threat level for EEE was elevated to critical today -- the top rung on the state Department of Public Health's ranking system. The decision came one day after the state agency determined that a Westborough resident was Massachusetts' first reported death this year from Eastern equine encephalitis, the agency said in a press release. The resident was "likely exposed" in Westborough, the agency said. DPH Media Relations Manager Anne Roach told Westborough Patch the agency does not release or confirm such victims' names. However, the Boston Globe reports the resident is Benjamin Duce, 79. Westborough Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said this morning the victim resided in the southeast part of Westborough, near the …

Westborough Resident Dies From EEE

Victim resided near Hopkinton/Westborough border.

A Westborough resident has died of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said this morning. Westborough health officials received the news shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, he said. McNulty said the victim resided in the southeast part of Westborough, near the Hopkinton border. McNulty said he did not want to identify the victim, whom he said died in August. The Telegram & Gazette reports that the victim was in his 70s. Westborough's EEE risk has been at high since the Massachusetts Department of Public Health elevated it to that level on Aug. 16. The next day, Westborough officials closed all recreation fields, all school fields and all town parks at sunset until further notice. A sign at the Westborough rotary …

EEE Having Little Effect on Westborough High Teams

Most events happen 'well before dusk,' AD says.

Westborough High School's sports schedule has "not been affected too much" by the town's EEE threat level being high, Athletic Director Johanna DiCarlo said today. On Aug. 17, Westborough officials closed all recreation fields, all school fields and all town parks at sunset until further notice, one day after the threat of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Westborough was elevated to high. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health elevated the threat level because human-biting, EEE-postive mosquitoes have been found here. The Westborough public schools' first day of school was Wednesday. Rangers teams are scrimmaging, and games start next week. DiCarlo noted that WHS teams typically practice after school; only two or three go beyond 5:30 …

Mosquito Spraying at Westborough Schools Planned Tonight

Westborough's EEE threat level remains high.

Mosquito spraying at Westborough's schools will happen tonight, as the town's EEE threat level remains high, Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project Executive Director Timothy Deschamps said today. Spraying at Westborough's parks is expected again this week, Deschamps said. Westborough officials last Friday closed all recreation fields, all school fields and all town parks at sunset until further notice, one day after the threat of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Westborough was elevated to high. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health elevated the threat level because human-biting, EEE-postive mosquitoes have been found here. Deschamps said today the mosquito control project began spraying on Thursday in Westborough Center "where the …

EEE Closes All Westborough Fields, Parks At Sunset

The state Department of Public Health elevated the town's threat level to high on Thursday.

Westborough officials today closed all recreation fields, all school fields and all town parks at sunset until further notice because the threat of EEE in Westborough was elevated to high Thursday, Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said. The news means that some scheduled youth and school sports practices and games will be adjusted to end before sunset, Recreation Director Frank DeSiata and School Superintendent Marianne O'Connor said. McNulty said Westborough health officials took today's action in cooperation with the recreation and school departments, as well as Town Manager Jim Malloy. DeSiata said recreation and school officials will post the news on signs at their fields. "Just like we tell people you should wear seat belts, if …

State Raises Westborough's EEE Threat, Recommends Residents Curtail Evening Outdoor Plans

Today's moves happened after mammal-biting, EEE-postive mosquitoes were found here.

Westborough residents planning evening outdoor activities over the rest of the summer should think twice, the state Department of Public Health said today. The state agency has elevated Westborough's Eastern Equine Encephalitis threat level to high, because mammal-biting, EEE-postive mosquitoes have been found here. Mosquito spraying will be "enhanced" here and in New Bedford, which had its threat level raised to high today as well and for the same reason, the agency said in a press release. The agency is recommending that both communities curtail outdoor evening events "for the remainder of the summer," according to the press release. “We continue to see elevated levels of EEE activity in mosquitoes across the region, so it’s more …

Mosquito Spraying in Westborough Occurs Without Incident

More mosquitoes will be sent for testing Tuesday.

Mosquito spraying in Westborough occurred without incident last Thursday following more EEE-positive mosquitoes being found here, Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project Executive Director Timothy Deschamps said today. More mosquitoes will be sent for testing Tuesday, with the results available within a day or two, he said. The latest Eastern Equine Encephalitis mosquitoes were confirmed last Wednesday in a mosquito control project trap off Summer Street Extension on July 27. The Milk Street area was sprayed last Monday because mosquitoes with EEE were identified last Thursday in a trap the mosquito control project set there July 17.

More EEE Mosquitoes Found in Westborough

Spraying of Summer Street Extension planned for Thursday.

More mosquitoes with the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus have been found in Westborough, prompting more spraying Thursday, Central Mass. The latest EEE mosquitoes were confirmed earlier today in a mosquito control project trap off Summer Street Extension on July 27, Deschamps said in a press release. The spraying has been coordinated with the Westborough Board of Health, he wrote. Deschamps also is urging residents to take precautions when outside. Spraying will occur in Westborough for the second time this week. The Milk Street area was sprayed Monday because mosquitoes with EEE were identified last Thursday in a trap the mosquito control project set there July 17.

Mosquito Spraying in Westborough Goes Well

Residents should continue taking precautions.

Spraying in Westborough where mosquitoes with EEE were found recently went well Monday, Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project Executive Director Timothy Deschamps said today. However, the agency will continue trapping and testing mosquitoes in that Milk Street area, as well as elsewhere in town, Deschamps said. Residents should continue taking precautions, he added. Mosquitoes with the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus were identified last Thursday in a trap the mosquito control project set off Milk Street on July 17, according to a project press release.
