On Monday, April 9, six Cub Scouts in Westborough Pack 4, Den 3 invited Westborough Patch editor MaryJo Kurtz to speak about communications and reporting. The group met in the basement of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where Kurtz told the Scouts how to gather information to report a story. She then put them to work. The boys, students at Hastings and Fales elementary schools, were armed with reporter's notebooks and learned the five W's of reporting: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Each boy reported on the jobs of the parents in the room and then interviewed each other about their weekend. "That was impressive," said Kurtz after hearing the boys' reports. Based on their outstanding reports, It is safe to say that Westborough has a new den of…

Westborough Cub Scout Pack 100 held its annual race on Saturday, March 10.
It was a new venue for Westborough Cub Scout Pack 100 and the annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, March 10. After years of holding the event at the Westborough Senior Center, the Scouts and dozens of supporters turned out in the auditorium of the Forbes Municipal Building. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., a weighing station opened at the entrance to the auditorium and contestants lined up with their creations. Some of the cars were built for speed, others for creativity. Three parents weighed, measured and registered each car. The cars, designed from wooden blocks, must meet size regulations and weigh no more than 5 ounces. Races started at about 11:15. A crowd surrounded a large metal track which was set up in the middle of the hall. Cheers …

Information courtesy of Westborough Cub Scout Webelos, Den 4, Pack 33. On Tuesday, March 6, Westborough Cub Scout Webelos welcomed Mill Pond School Principal Reene Hatherley. The meeting took place in Webb Hall of the First United Methodist Church on West Main Street. The Scouts, fourth graders at the school, were working on their Scholar Activity Badge — and who better to assist them than their principal. Mrs. Hatherley reviewed the value of an education, some of the full-time positions in the field of education and led the boys in a discussion about “the best things (and problems) at my school." She helped the boys understand how the school system is run — from the Federal Department of Education down to a Scout’s homeroom teacher…

It’s Magic! was the theme of the Westborough Cub Scout Pack 100 Blue and Gold Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 11. The annual event is celebrated by Cub Scout packs nationwide during the February, the anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. “We have about 170 people here tonight,” said organizer Connie Hastings. “It’s a full house.” The event started with a buffet dinner in the Mill Pond School cafeteria, followed by an entertaining magical performance by magician Bonaparté in the school auditorium. Children of all ages started the evening at the balloon table to create balloon hats, belts, animals and other creations. Tables were decorated in the blue and gold theme with centerpieces and placemats created by the Cub Scouts. After a …
