Westborough Boy Scouts Prepared for Packed Year

This year's Good Scout Dinner is on Nov. 7.

Westborough’s three Boy Scout troops are preparing for a year of events and service projects. This summer, all three troops attended a week at Camp Resolute in Bolton, and one troop travelled to Cimarron Mexico and hiked for 11 days in the Rocky Mountains at the Philmont Scout Ranch, one of the Boy Scouts’ high adventure camps. This year, the troops will camp throughout New England, from climbing Mt. Greylock to bicycling on Cape Cod; from winter camping in the White Mountains of New Hampshire to deep sea fishing off the New England coast; from whitewater rafting on the Deerfield River to exploring Purgatory Chasm in Whitinsville. Next summer, about 25 Westborough scouts and five adult leaders will attend the National Jamboree, at the …

Boy Scout Troop 100 Honors Newest Eagle Scout

Erik Brandt earned the highest Boy Scout award in both the United States and Canada.

  On May 5, Westborough Boy Scout Troop 100 will award the rank of Eagle Scout to Erik Brandt. Brandt. The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in the Congregational Church on West Main Street. Erik is now recognized as having achieved prestigious scouting awards in both Canada and the United States. In 2008, Erik earned the Chief Scout’s Award, the highest award that can be achieved at the scout level in Scouts Canada. The Brandt family moved from Calgary, Alberta to Westborough in September 2008 and Erik joined Troop 100 in October of that year. As a member of Troop 100, Erik earned 31 merit badges and held important leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader, Instructor and Quartermaster. Erik was an active camper on monthly …

The annual Cub Scout Pack 100 Blue and Gold Banquet took place on Saturday, Feb. 11.

  It’s Magic! was the theme of the Westborough Cub Scout Pack 100 Blue and Gold Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 11. The annual event is celebrated by Cub Scout packs nationwide during the February, the anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. “We have about 170 people here tonight,” said organizer Connie Hastings. “It’s a full house.” The event started with a buffet dinner in the Mill Pond School cafeteria, followed by an entertaining magical performance by magician Bonaparté  in the school auditorium. Children of all ages started the evening at the balloon table to create balloon hats, belts, animals and other creations. Rod Jané Honored With Good Scout Award

The annual award presentation will take place on Nov. 2.

Information courtesy of the Knox Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America.   The 2011 Westborough Good Scout Award will be presented to Rod Jané on Nov. 2 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Westborough. The event begins at 6 p.m. An opening ceremony by the Scouts is scheduled to take place at 6:55 p.m. Dinner and the Good Scout Award presentation will follow. “Jané, a Westborough resident, has done much to strengthen the community through his involvement in public service and youth sports,” read a press statement from the Boy Scouts of America Knox Trail Council. PJ Casello Earns Eagle Scout

Local Boy Scout PJ Casello earned the rank of Eagle Scout after completing a project making blankets for the Red Cross.

Local high school senior PJ Casello, from Troop 100, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Casello worked with a team of about 30 Boy Scouts to make fleece blankets for the Red Cross of Worcester, Disaster Services. Each blanket took between 1 and 1 1/2 hours to complete and took the Scouts over 200 hours to finish. He made two separate deliveries of 25 blankets each. Within a week of the first delivery, a fire in Worcester left several families displaced. The Red Cross was able to use Casello's blankets to help those families. Casello said he spent months raising money for materials by having a can and bottle drive and even used some funds from his own savings. Several companies donated materials or offered…
