WWI Air Combat Carries New Book

Westborough resident Bill Carr, the author, spoke at Tatnuck Bookseller on Saturday.

Less than a year after earning his master's degree in military history, Westborough's Bill Carr taught it here Saturday. The World War II veteran discussed his new book, "A Pact With the Devil: World War I Air Combat," at the Tatnuck Bookseller. "With the 100th anniversary of WWI coming up in 2014, this book captures the drama and heroism of the period," the event flyer notes. "This book describes the progress of aerial combat from 1914-1918. It contains biographies of famous pilots and airplanes of WWI. It also shows how the aviation industry grew and evolved. Finally, the author shows his personal connection through his father, who was a pilot in the 1930's." Carr graduated from Worcester State University last year. The United States …

83-Year-Old Robin Road Man Awarded Masters Degree

The new graduate is in the process of starting a business.

  On Sunday, May 6, there was a graduation party on Robin Road. Friends, family and neighbors turned out to congratulate 83-year-old Bill Carr, who was awarded his masters degree in military history from Worcester State University. When asked the hardest part of getting an education in his 80s, Carr didn’t hesitate for an answer. “The hardest part was getting there,” he said. Carr is legally blind and no longer drives, so he had to depend on others to give him rides to and from classes. “I got rides from friends, the Knights of Columbus, my daughter and others.” He took one class each semester, earning the degree over six years, he said. “I love education, and I love military history,” he told Westborough Patch. “I have an optical reader …
