Health Officials Get Beetle Training

The Westborough Department of Public Works hosted the session.

Westborough's top three health officials are now trained to identify the Asian Longhorned Beetle, which has been found in Shrewsbury, Worcester and other Central Mass. communities. The Westborough Department of Public Works hosted the training on Jan. 11, Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said Wednesday. McNulty, Town Sanitarian Steven Baccari and Health Inspector Terry Gilchrist were among those attending the session. "We have had a number of people bring us large beetles for identification, thinking it may be the LHB," McNulty told the board of health in his January report. Scouting Group Earns Tree Badge

Westborough Girl Scouts study the Asian Longhorned Beetle.

Information and photos provided by the Westborough Girl Scouts.   The girls in Westborough Girl Scout Troop 30859 went a little buggy earning their Cadette Tree Badge. The group recently visited the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources to learn about the Asian Longhorned Beetle. The presentation included a history of the bug, how to identify it, how to recognize a tree that has been damaged by the beetle and how to report a sighting of the Asian Longhorned Beetle.
