Get a Tree and a Book Today

Westborough is observing Arbor Day.

A book and a place to read beside are both available at the Westborough Public Library today. Fifty white pine saplings were placed at the library's circulation desk at noon by the Westborough Department of Public Works. Westborough is observing Arbor Day, which is today. Some of the saplings were gone minutes into the DPW's program.

Ground Work Laid For Arbor Day

Selectmen OK proclamation.

Selectmen have laid the ground work for Westborough residents to plant at least tree saplings again this spring. Selectmen this past week approved a proclamation encouraging residents to observe Arbor Day on April 26 "by either planting a tree or maintaining existing trees to promote the well being of this and future generations." Public Works Manager John Walden presented the proclamation for the board's approval. The tree saplings will be available at the public works department on a first come, first served basis, on April 16, he said. Past sapling distributions have been "very good," Walden said. "We've given them all away," he said. "It's worked out very well." Walden said he'll explore getting more than 50 saplings this year. …

DPW Gives Away Free Trees for Arbor Day

Fifty trees will be handed out on a first come first serve basis at the Westborough Public Library on Monday, April 25.

Last year, I stopped by the Department of Public Works (DPW) building on Oak Street to pick up one of the 50 free saplings being given away to residents for Arbor Day. Today, one year later, I took this photo of my little sapling. It made it through the winter on my back porch and will soon be strong enough to plant in the yard. On Monday, April 25, the DPW will again be giving away trees in honor of Arbor Day. The distribution will take place at the Westborough Public Library beginning at 10 a.m. Fifty Douglas fir saplings will be given to Westborough residents on a first come first serve basis.

What a great way to recognize Arbor Day! That being said, anyone have some tree planting suggestions? My mother gave me and my husband a tree the year we were married...it's dead now. (The marriage lives on, though!) :-)   more ›
