Westborough photographer Mike Kelly hooked some great photos at the Saturday event.
One of the highlights of the Westborough Spring Festival each year is the annual Westborough Civic Club Fishing Challenge at Sandra Pond. On Saturday, May 5, about 150 people of all ages registered for the event. “Completely sold out of worms and saw more fish caught than any other year,” said photographer Mike Kelly. “Bass, pickerel, bluegills.” This year was the sixth consecutive year that the Westborough Civic Club joined with the Rotary Club of Westborough to present the fishing program. Members of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife were on hand to help newcomers. Fishing poles were available at the free program. Prizes were awarded for various age levels. Kelly put his talents to work and reeled in dozens of prize …

Jeff Keaveney takes first place in the Maine contest.
Westborough Police Officer Jeffrey Keaveney placed first in his division of the Central Maine Strongman competition on Saturday, April 14. Of the 39 competitors, seven others shared the heavyweight division with Keaveney. “[I’m] very excited for this win because I’ve been battling some injuries and have been working really hard to keep myself together for the show,” he told Westborough Patch. “The competition in my class was probably the toughest I’ve gone up against, so it was an awesome feeling to come out on top.” Keaveney, 36, started competing in bodybuilding in 2010. He said he has always been athletic. From 1996 to 2001, he played professional baseball. He was drafted by the Red Sox and later played for the Twins organization. He…

'Where else would I rather be?'
Most likely you have seen Bruce Tretter biking through Westborough. The avid cyclist logged 5,000 miles in the past year, and that was not a record-setting year for him. “A few years ago, I did 7,000 miles,” he said. “That was unusual.” Tretter, 53, has been biking as long as he can remember. But taking up the sport more seriously happened for him just after graduating high school in 1976. “We took a bike trip in France…It was one of those ‘sleep under the stars’ trips.” Always an avid rider, he never thought about how far he was biking until receiving a bike computer as a gift. “I was reluctant to use it. I really had no interest in it,” he said. “I got like three of them before I finally strapped one onto the bike.” After that, he was …

Many Marathon runners have reportedly been affected by the heat today.
UPDATED: Lynn Walz, aid station supervisor, said "We've had an abnormal number of patients. ... Most have heat exhaustion, but some have other injuries," such as sprained ankles and bad knees. EARLIER: Patch has received an alert of a "mass casualty incident," as an ambulance task force was requested for numerous runners in the Boston Marathon who have suffered heat related injuries. It is presently 82 degrees in the area of the Marathon. Last year's leading runner dropped out because of the heat, according to a report on WBZ. Visit Patch for updates on this story
Twenty Westborough residents were registered to run in the 2012 Boston Marathon.
Congratulations to the Westborough runners who are registered to run in today’s marathon. It appears that all but one chose not to heed heat warnings and pass on today’s marathon. As results for our Westborough athletes become available, we will post them here thoughout the day. Here is the current Westborough registrant list from the Boston Athletic Association: Westborough Patch confirmed that Susan Smith finished the marathon, though no official time was published by the BAA.
Patch is bringing you updates and pictures as we get them.
Patch staff is out and about in Massachusetts today taking pictures of spectators. If we missed you and yours, feel free to add your own pictures to this post.
