Could you use a piano?

You may have heard it before -- at Westborough Town Hall.

A silent auction at the town hall on Saturday will offer the piano available to the highest bidder, Assistant Town Manager/Human Resources Director Kristi Williams says.

Two soapstone sinks, and a stove, also will be up for bid during the auction, set for 9 a.m. to noon at 34 West Main St., Williams says.

And about 450 antique wooden folding chair sets will be available for $5 per set, cash and carry, she says.

"We have had a lot of inquiries about these including an interested person calling to ask if he can purchase all of them so I would expect those to all go," Williams said during an e-mail interview.

"All other items will go to the highest bidder but we expect the sinks to be the most popular items and therefore go for the most money."

Williams said that "we really don't have any expectation as far as amount of revenue but any money raised will go into the General Fund as a miscellaneous revenue."

The auction will precede the town hall renovation project. On Nov. 26, selectmen awarded the general contractor bid for the renovation to RAC Builders Inc. for $5,394,700.

Williams said that on Saturday, visitors will see items such as the piano in their current places.

"All items will have an envelope where people will put their name, address and phone number as well as bid for the item," she explained.

"(Buildings and Grounds Supervisor) Frank (Cornine) and I will go through the bids on Monday and contact the winners. All items must be removed by the winning bidder no later than 4 p.m. on Jan. 8."
