Update: Stay Cool at Senior Center Friday Night, Saturday

The summer Friday hours have been extended to help people beat the heat.

The Westborough Senior Center has extended its summer Friday hours to help people beat the heat.

The center now will be open until 8 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, for anyone trying to beat the heat, Executive Director Alma DeManche said.

Transportation will be available on a limited basis by calling 508-366-3000, she said.

Earlier Friday, Office Coordinator Debbie Manoloules said the center would be open until 5 p.m., and "if need be, we'll stay longer."

Located at 4 Rogers Road, the center normally closes at 1 p.m. during the summer, she said.

"Come in, stay cool, be comfortable, drink lemonade," she said.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued an excessive heat warning from noon to 7 p.m. Friday. The advisory covers much of Southern New England, including Worcester.

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely," the weather service wrote on its website.

"Avoid prolonged work in the sun or in poorly ventilated areas. Drink plenty of fluids...stay in an air-conditioned environment...stay out of the sun...and check in on relatives and neighbors."
