WHS Girls Soccer Wins 1st District Title

Westborough advances to the state Division 1 semi-final, at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Westfield State University. The Rangers will play the West champion. The winner advances to the final.

The Westborough High School varsity girls soccer team arrived at Wachusett on Saturday banged up by injuries, and left feeling better than ever.

Winning Westborough's first girls soccer Sectionals championship will do that to a team.

The Rangers defeated Algonquin, 2-0, in the 2013 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Soccer Central Division 1 final at Wachusett, in Holden.

Saturday's game was the second between Westborough and Algonquin this fall.

Algonquin defeated Westborough, 4-3, at WHS on Oct. 19, according to the Midland-Wachusett League website.

And this time, “to be honest with you, coming into the game, we had so many injuries that I didn’t know if we would be able to overcome them,” Westborough head coach Paul Mumby said.

“(Sophomore) Carly Flahive hasn’t played for the last week, (our) second-best goal scorer. It’s like, ‘You’re up against it.’ But after that, you would never know we had injuries. They played with so much heart and compassion and commitment.”

About seven minutes into the game, senior Olivia McGourty scored, assisted by sophomore Rakasa Pattanaik.

Pattanaik scored, unassisted, with 25:28 left in the game.

“She’s unbelievable," Mumby said.

"Carly’s injured, so she took her opportunity. (She) played a great game for me.”

Mumby said he changed Westborough's formation since Algonquin handed the Rangers their only loss this season.

“We knew their players, how they played. So, I made sure we were matched well against them," he said.

The Rangers (15-1-2 regular season) were seeded first in the 10-team tournament. Algonquin (13-2-3) was seeded third.

Algonquin head coach Scot Taggart congratulated Westborough for playing "a great game."

“It just didn’t go our way today," he said.

"It was a great season. I’m very proud of my seniors. They led the team very well all year long. I’m disappointed for them.”
