WHS Girls Soccer Sports 'Really Solid' Roster

Westborough opens its season at Holy Name at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Westborough High School varsity girls soccer senior co-captains Kylie Bradley and Katie Litwin complement each other, head coach Paul Mumby says.

Bradley, who plays center defense, is "a good, well-rounded athlete. The girls look to her for advice, encouragement. She's never, ever negative. She's always positive. And she's just a good role model for the kids," he says.

"And the same for Katie," who plays right back. "Exactly the same: strong, determined, soccer is what they do through and through."

On the field, "Katie's a lot more vocal than Kylie. She's a vocal leader. Kylie's more the one to lead by example. But, both of them have great attributes. They work well together," Mumby says.

Westborough opens its season at Holy Name at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Rangers' home opener is at 3:30 p.m. Friday against Nashoba.

Westborough finished last season 11-4-3, and received a first-round bye in the 2012 Massachusetts Girls Soccer Central Division 1 Tournament. The Rangers lost to Marlborough, 1-0, in the quarterfinals.

The 2013 roster includes 14 seniors, and "the players who aren't seniors also are good players too," Mumby said.

"It's nice to have such a big class, and hopefully they can pull together and have a good season," said Mumby, who is in his seventh year as Westborough's head coach.

The Rangers' top two scorers from 2012 are back, Mumby said: senior Olivia McGourty and sophomore Carly Flahive.

"I've got some really solid players. I really do," Mumby said.

Bradley, Litwin and junior Jenna Thomas will be among the defensive standouts, he said.

The goalkeepers will be seniors Margo Murphy and Jordan DeArmond.

"They're great athletes, so I'm hoping they're going to do a good job," Mumby said.

The roster is:
