WHS Football Sees More Interest

Westborough opens the season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Nashoba.

The Westborough High School varsity football team is slightly bigger in 2013, both in numbers and size.

That's why the season "looks promising," head coach Mark Ellis says.

"There's no question about that. We've got more guys out than we did last year," says Ellis, who's in his 13th year as the Rangers' head coach.

"For our school, we finally have a little bit of size. We're still kind of small, but we have more size than we've had in the past, which I'm excited for."

Westborough opens the season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Nashoba.

The Rangers' home opener is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 against Marlborough.

Westborough finished 2012 at 1-10.

But while the roster features several newcomers, it also returns a good core that includes such players as quarterback Dan Orlando and running back Mike Gallo, Ellis says.

"We're going to lean on those guys to bring along the other guys a little faster than normal," Ellis said.

Orlando and fellow seniors Kevin White and Kevin Sanders are Westborough's captains this season.

Orlando is "very passionate" about football, and "wears the passion on his sleeve," Ellis says.

"He doesn't take any plays off. He gets after it all the time. I think guys look at him and go, 'Hey, I want to be like him.' The kid works hard. He's got a great work ethic," Ellis says.

White, a linebacker, is "our defensive specialist," Ellis says.

"Kevin's very organized, and he doesn't know when to quit. He's just all out straight ahead," Ellis says.

"He's definitely a motivating leader, leads by example most of the time, but has the capability of talking."

Sanders, a wide receiver/defensive back, is "very good at communicating with the other guys," Ellis says.

"He runs the Facebook (page) where the captains get information out. He's always asking questions. 'What's next?' And he's a guy that always gets it done," Ellis says.
