Wachusett Spoils WHS Boys Hoop Opener in OT
The Rangers are off until 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, when the two-day Rocket Classic begins at Auburn High School. Westborough will open with Sutton.
Visiting Wachusett spoiled the Westborough High School varsity boys basketball team's home opener, 60-57, in overtime Friday night.
Rangers senior captain Kevin Doherty hit the second of two free throws with 1.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 56-56.
Wachusett then scored the first point of the four-minute overtime, when junior Justin Bowker hit the first of two free throws with 2:02 left.
A free throw by Westborough senior Steven Frame tied the score at 57-57 with 1:02 left.
With 52.3 seconds left, Wachusett sophomore guard Tyler Dion hit a free throw, giving the Mountaineers a 58-57 lead.
Dion then hit a two-pointer, for a 60-57 lead.
The Rangers led 31-21 at halftime.
Doherty led Westborough with 19 points. Junior Connor Fitzgerald added 12.
Dion led Wachusett with 21 points. Bowker added 12, and junior Kevin Durkin added 10.
