The Westborough High School varsity volleyball team rallied to take Notre Dame Academy of Hingham to a fifth game in the state Division 2 final Saturday before losing in game five, 15-12, at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough.
“That was awesome volleyball. You can’t deny that,” Rangers head coach Roger Anderson said.
“I’m extremely proud of the girls. When you stand in the face of a worthy opponent and you step in the arena, there’s always a chance you’re going to win, and a chance you’re going to lose. There was no fear. There was tremendous courage, and tremendous love, and tremendous discipline from our team. They (Notre Dame) played great at the very end of game five, and they got us.

“We threw everything they had at them, and they got it done at the end.”
Division 2 South champion Notre Dame won two of the first three games, and led 18-12 in game four before Central champion Westborough went on a 15-7 run at the end, winning the game 27-25.“That comeback was built on playing a schedule that’s really tough and being in battles all year long," Anderson said.

"We don’t relent to anybody. You can knock us down, but we’re just going to keep coming back. That was never more clear than at the end of game four. They really did have us dead to rights. They outscored us 16-5 at one point. We fought back.”
Notre Dame won game one, 25-20. Westborough won game two, 25-18. Notre Dame then won game three, 25-18.
Notre Dame defeated North champion Bishop Fenwick, 3-0, in the semi-finals Wednesday night at Tewksbury.
Westborough became Central Sectional champ by defeated Canton, 3-1, in the 2013 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Central Division 2 final last Saturday at Hudson.
Westborough (16-2 regular season) was seeded second in the Sectionals. Canton (17-2) was seeded first.
