WHS Field Hockey Will Draw on Experience

Westborough next plays at 4 p.m. Monday, hosting Quabbin.

The Westborough High School varsity field hockey team opened its season Tuesday at home, and more comfortable on the field.

“I had a lot of new players last year. I think we have a very good nucleus coming back this season in comparison,” Rangers head coach Colleen Debish says.

“It’s nice to see that those kids who got some good experience last year are coming back and are much stronger players and are ready to offer some leadership.”

“I think we’re going to have a fun season. I’m excited about the point where the players are starting out. “

Westborough hosted Leominster on Tuesday.

The Rangers next play at 4 p.m. Monday, hosting Quabbin.

The Rangers finished 2012 with a 7-8-1 record. Westborough then defeated St. Peter-Marian, 1-0, in overtime in the first round of the 2012 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Field Hockey Central Division 1 tournament, before losing to Burncoat, 2-0, in the quarterfinals.

“We had a lot of one-goal differences in our losses last year," says Debish, who's in her 26th season as Westborough's head coach.

"I think offensively we’ll be much stronger, and the kids are much more confident.”

Senior tri-captains Hannah Crowley, Erin Moore and Sara Krane will lead the Rangers this season.

Crowley will play midfield or attack.

“She’s just a tremendous kid. She works really hard. She sets a great example. She’s just a very unselfish player," Debish says.

Moore will play midfield and attack as well.

“She was unfortunately injured a lot of last year, so it’s good that she’s coming back as a senior and as a captain. She’s a great passer, gets good field position, and she can make some things happen," Debish says.

Krane will play attack wing.

“Sara is blessed with tons of speed, good stick work, can make a lot of things happen on attack for us," Debish says.

The Rangers' defense will include such players as seniors Emily Reilly and Ashley Solares, and junior Julia McKay, Debish says.

The goalies will be sophomore Darci Rota and junior Catherine DiSaia.

The roster is:

  • Seniors: Jacqueline Avola, Hannah Crowley, Annie King, Sara Krane, Erin Moore, Emily Reilly and Ashley Solares.
  • Juniors: Leah Bridge, Catherine DiSaia, Vaishali Malik, Erin McCarthy, Julia McKay, Michaila Parent, Caitlin Potts, Katie Slocum, Lauren Smith and Samantha Weckwerth.
  • Sophomores: Sarah Bracey and Darci Rota.
  • Freshmen: Peyton Brown and Olivia Weckworth.
