Deep WHS Girls Basketball Team Opens Medway Tourney

The Rangers' roster includes eight seniors.

The Westborough High School varsity girls basketball team enters the two-day Medway Holiday Tournament on Friday with a 1-1 record.

And with head coach Scott Kittredge excited about the roster's depth.

The Rangers have eight seniors returning from last year's team. which lost to Holy Name, 58-33, in the 2013 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athetic Association Girls Basketball Central Division 1 quarterfinals, Kittredge said during a pre-season interview. Westborough finished the regular season 10-10. Holy Name lost to Central Catholic in the state Division 1 final, 53-48.

Westborough opens the Medway tournament at 4 p.m. Friday against Natick. Friday's results will determine Saturday's schedule at the tournament.

Seniors Catherine Martin, Tori Flahive and Mia Natale are the Rangers' captains this season.

Martin is one of Westborough's point guards, and an "on the ball defender. (She's) one of our better outside shoorters," Kittredge said.

Flahive is one of Westborough's top returning scorers.

"She's versatile. She's a real long, athletic defender. (She) uses her quickness to her advantage there. She can slash to the hoop. She's a good outside shooter as well. She's pretty well rounded," Kittredge said.

Natale "likely will lead us in rebounds. She's a good post defender, even though a lot of times she's giving up some size," he said.

The Rangers entered the season with senior Amy Wilichowski, one of their top scorers last year, injured, Kittredge said.

That said, the coach expects Westborough to be a "balanced scoring team" this season.

And defensively, the roster has "a lot of good athletes. We should be able to use our quickness, hopefully disrupt what (opponents are) trying to run," Kittredge said.

The roster includes:

Seniors: Tori Flahive (captain), Catherine Martin (captain), Mia Natale (captain), Janet Khoury, Jordan DeArmond, Amy Wilichowski, Melissa Mastrogiacomo and Maria Hession.

Juniors: Michaila Parent.

Sophomores: Julie Hutchinson, Carly Flahive and Kaylie Doherty.
