Assabet Valley Grapplers Head to All State Tourney

Two members of the team will wrestle at the Tsongas Arena.

On Feb. 21, the AMSA/Assabet Valley Wrestling team, under the direction of new head coach, Matt Schiller, travelled to Foxboro High School for a two day MIAA Division 3 Wrestling tournament. Three members of the team, all Assabet students, had qualified the previous weekend at the Division 3 Central Mass Sectionals.

John Cone, wrestling at the 160 lbs. slot, entered the tournament ranked third for Central Mass. Cone was able to battle back after an initial loss and placed fifth for Division 3.

Derek Yanchewski, in the 220 lbs. weight class in his first year back in the sport, entered the tournament ranked first overall for Central Mass and placed fourth for Division 3.

Unfortunately, the third Assabet wrestler, Keith DeAmicis, in the 195 lbs. slot, had qualified for the tourney by placing third at the Sectionals, but was injured in practice the week preceding the tourney and was unable to compete further.

Both Yanchewski and Cone will head to the All State Tournament in Lowell at the Tsongas Arena on Feb. 28 and March 1.
