Schools' Lunches Earn Apple

Westborough has been certified as compliant with the new federal nutrition standards.

Give the Westborough public schools’ lunch program an apple.

The program has been certified as compliant with the new federal nutrition standards, School Superintendent Marianne O’Connor told the school committee Wednesday night.

As result: “we will now receive six additional cents for every meal that’s purchased,” a decision that took effect in October, she said.

“I think this is a way for the government to really say, ‘Our sales are down. For us to sort of break even now with the food service, because of the healthy choices, we’re not selling as many lunches per day,” O’Connor said.

The student lunch prices are: elementary, $2.75; Gibbons Middle School and Westborough High School, $3.
