School Bus to Travel Westborough Woods Route

The school committee wants to see how safe the route is for students.

The school committee will have a Westborough school bus travel roundtrip between 346 Turnpike Road and Route 20 in Northborough.

That's the expected pickup and dropoff route for Westborough Woods, a 250-unit affordable housing complex proposed for 346 Turnpike Road (Route 9) near Otis Street.

Only one access is proposed: off Route 9.

School officials have raised concerns about student safety on the bus route.

This past week, school committee Vice Chairman Stephen Doret said "I think it's prudent that the school committee have at least a bus travel the route that's been discussed" to "determine any issues associated with that route that should be corrected for the buses to travel safely."

The school board voted unanimously to support Doret's idea.

"I'd be happy to ride on that bus. I really would. I'd love to see it," School Superintendent Marianne O'Connor added.

Doret noted that the route would have students would "leave the town and come back."

"The safety of the students as they travel that route" is the most important issue, he said.

"I believe, personally, that that route is ridiculous," Doret said.

The Westborough Zoning Board of Appeals is reviewing 346 Turnpike Road LLC's proposed development under the state's Chapter 40B affordable housing law.

The public hearing continues at 7:30 p.m. next Monday at the Forbes Municipal Building.
