Bracelets Remind Community of Lizzi's Light

The Westborough High School Student Council is selling the bracelets for $2.

Lizzi Marriott “had a personality that could light up the room,” Westborough High School junior Katie Heffernan says.

A new Westborough High Student Council fundraiser has people wearing reminders of Lizzi Marriott’s personality, on their wrists.

The proceeds from “The Lizzi Light” bracelets are going toward a Lizzi Marriott scholarship fund being run by the family.

The students began selling the bracelets for $2 the Monday before Thanksgiving, and sold them during the Thanksgiving football game, junior Kerry Chen says. Lizzi Marriott graduated from Westborough High in 2011.

The idea for the bracelets arose during a student council brainstorming session, Heffernan says.

“We figured out that that’s the best way to do it, because you can see the bracelets and you can wear them every day, and remember her every day,” she says.

About 300 of the 1,000 bracelets have been sold, she says.

The student council will  “try to get them out into the community” through a store, Heffernan says.

“We’re going to try to sell all of them, to make the scholarship as much as possible,” she says.

“A lot of people want to buy them, because it’s an easy way to remember her, and just remember than anything can happen to anyone.”

According to New Hampshire authorities, Lizzi Marriott, 19, attended a night class at the University of New Hampshire on Oct. 9 before she went to visit a friend in Dover, N.H.

Authorities say that Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover strangled and/or suffocated her inside of his Sawyer Mill apartment. Based on information they received, the Coast Guard and New Hampshire Marine Patrol have been searching the waters around Peirce Island in Portsmouth to recover her body.

Mazzaglia was charged with second degree murder and is being held at the Strafford County Jail in Dover without bail. He is awaiting indictment.

“Nothing like this happens in Westborough normally. It’s such a rare occasion,” Heffernan says.
