Westborough Places Second in Voter Turnout Contest
Upton won the Sen. Louis Bertonazzi Foundation Outstanding Citizenship Award, nudging aside Mendon and Westborough. Milford came in a distant ninth.
Small towns rule, in voter participation anyway.
Upton won this year's Sen. Louis Bertonazzi Foundation's Outstanding Citizenship Award, which recognizes the community with the highest percentage of voter turnout in the 2011-12 elections.
Upton had an average voting percentage of 29.9 percent of registered voters. The contest considered voter turnout in five elections, from the local elections in March 2011 through the Presidential Election this year.

Westborough and Mendon fell behind Upton by less than 1 percent, at 29.4 and 29.3 percent respectively.
Bellingham (27.7 percent), Northbridge (26.8 percent), Auburn (26.1 percent), Hopedale (25.8 percent), Grafton (25.3 percent) and Milford (24.8 percent) fell in behind the top three towns.

The purpose of the citizenship contest, which compares 19 communities, is to provide an incentive for communities to encourage voter turnout.
As winner, Upton will receive $1,000 to be used to encourage voter turnout, and a large banner will be hung in the town proclaiming it the "Best Voting Community 2011-12."
