Government Shutdown Won't Affect Westborough That Much

Meanwhile, as of Tuesday morning, the veterans services office hadn't received calls from veterans or soldiers' families concerned about how the shutdown might affect their benefits.

Wondering how the federal government shutdown will affect Westborough?

"Not the town tremendously, because we don't get a lot of federal dollars," Town Manager Jim Malloy said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, as of Tuesday morning, the veterans services office hadn't received calls from veterans or soldiers' families concerned about how the shutdown might affect their benefits, said Kenneth Ferrera, a veterans service officer for the Central Massachusetts Veterans Service District.

Ferrera shared a "Veterans Field Guide to Government Shutdown" being distributed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The guide has two lists of veterans services: those impacted by the shutdown, and those that are not.

Among those services impacted are:

  • Freedom of Information Act requests won't be processed
  • The VA's home page will be updated intermittently
  • The recruiting and hiring of veteran job applicants will cease
Among those services not impacted are:

  • All VA medical facilities and clinics will remain fully operational
  • Education benefit claims processing and payments
  • Home loan processing
