Police: Crash That Killed Teen Was "Preventable"

Pablo C. Salcedo was "distracted through the use of his cell phone to read and text messages" before the Jan. 5 crash, based on evidence found in his vehicle, police said in a press release.

A two-car accident that killed a Westborough teenager on Route 9 earlier this month was "preventable," Westborough Police said Thursday.

Pablo C. Salcedo was "distracted through the use of his cell phone to read and text messages" before the Jan. 5 crash, based on evidence found in his vehicle, police said in a press release.

"There was no indication that he attempted to brake to avoid the collision," police said.

Salcedo, 18, of 15 Willow St., was driving a 2001 Dodge Caravan at around 12:36 a.m. Jan. 5 when his vehicle rolled over on Route 9 East in front of the Speedway Plaza. He was trapped inside the vehicle, and extricated by Westborough firefighters.

Salcedo was a senior at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, where he majored in health technologies and captained the soccer team.

Officer Clifford Luce has completed his investigation of the crash, police said.
