New Fire Station Cost: $8.2 Million

"Hopefully, late August/early September we start to see some equipment there, some earth moving," Town Manager Jim Malloy said.

Westborough's new fire station will cost about $8.2 million.

Tuesday night, selectmen voted to award the construction bid to G & R Construction Inc. for $8,267,700.

Voters at the Oct. 15, 2012 special town meeting had authorized $11.2 million to design and construct the new station next to the current one at 42 Milk St., which will be demolished. Voters had agreed to borrow $10,008,000 and allocate $1,200,000 from free cash.

Not including the roughly $700,000 contingency, the construction portion of the project that was approved Tuesday night is about $500,000 under the estimate for construction, Town Manager James Malloy said. (Clarification: an earlier version of this story overestimated the amount the approval fell under the original construction estimate.)

"It took a while, but I think this is going to be a tremendous project, and a good thing for the town," Selectman Denny Drewry said.

Westborough received 11 bids for the project. The Municipal Building Committee opened the bids in the selectmen's meeting room at Westborough Town Hall last Thursday.

"Hopefully, late August/early September we start to see some equipment there, some earth moving," Town Manager Jim Malloy said.

Selectman Leigh Emery said the project has taken "months and years of work, stellar work."
