New Details Emerge in Murder of Lizzi Marriott

Foster's Daily Democrat and WBZ-TV reported the news today.

Foster's Daily Democrat is reporting that 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student and Westborough resident Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott was killed during a "sexual encounter."

The Dover, NH, newspaper did not name its source, saying only, "Foster's has learned the murder of University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott occurred during a sexual encounter." Seth Mazzaglia of Dover, NH, has been charged with second degree murder in connection with Marriott's death on Oct. 9.

WBZ-TV is also reporting this afternoon that police are investigating claims that Marriott was killed during a "group sex encounter" with Mazzaglia and another woman.

The Daily Mail is citing a law enforcement agent as saying a sexual enounter played a part in the murder.

Calls to the attorney general's office today have not been returned. Officials are not commenting on whether the reported sexual encounter was voluntary or involuntary.

Meanwhile, the search for Marriott's body continues in the waters off Peirce Island in Portsmouth.

With regard to the Lizzi Marriott story, the use of the phrase “sexual encounter” should be considered carefully. A sexual encounter sounds voluntary. You have no way of knowing whether any alleged sexual encounter was voluntary or involuntary. The only person or persons who could make such a claim is/are involved in Lizzi’s murder. Lizzi is not here to defend herself. Please have consideration for her family and friends and choose your words with them in mind. I think it would be a step in the direction of clarity and fairness if you added a statement to the story that in no way are the police or your news agency implying that a sexual encounter was voluntary.

Well said LHR. My thoughts exactly!

LHR, well said. The info is coming from people who are considered suspects... Consider the source & spare the family the heartache of reading such BULL! Deb :(

This is irresponsible, sensationalistic, tabloid journalism. No source given whatsoever. Unless this info was released by the police or attorney general's office, it is complete and utter here say and has no business being posted here. Absolutely shameful.

Completely agree
JustSayin' October 16, 2012 at 09:38 PM
Just to clarify, completely agree with above comments. This article is shameful.

I absolutely agree with the above. Why must journalists immediately jump to, and write, material that is sordid when all of the facts have not been substantiated. I also heard this on the radio moments ago.
C geibel October 16, 2012 at 10:42 PM
These "news" outlets really need to get their facts straight before publishing these new findings. I know that everyone has been wanting to hear more details about what actually went on that night between Mazzaglia and Marriott, which I'm sure the media is aware of as well. They really should not be publishing information until they have all the facts straight. Instead, they publish something like today's story just to sell more papers and to appeal to the public's curiosity. Speculation is not news, and without a credible source, that is all we are reading...speculations.

I am also appalled by the article. Let the family mourn their loss. God help us to find her body and may she rest in peace.
Christine Butler October 16, 2012 at 11:43 PM
My name is Christine Butler, I am a 2011 Westborough graduate. I am writing this on behalf of myself and others. Lizzi was not only my classmate, but someone I pole vaulted with, someone I had classes with, she was our prom queen, the girl who you never saw without a smile, the girl no one had anything bad to say about. She is a friend, a sister, a child. And you have the audacity to report this on Westborough Patch?? I am horrified. Kids read this, mothers read this, friends read this, family reads this. A 19 year old girl was murdered. Westborough is in a state of shock. Even people who do not know her are distraught and crying over her death. The world lost such an amazing person and this is what you choose to write about? The memory of Lizzi should not be ruined by claims of a 'group sex encounter.' This article should be taken down immediately.

Disgusting.....can't even think beyond that word.....just disgusting.
Claudia October 17, 2012 at 01:15 AM
I totally agree with Christine. In my oppinion this is why this type of "animals" keep doing what they do. They get inmediate fame and everyone talks about them and end up insulting and re-victimizing the victim and their family. Does anyone knows how to spell the word respect. This article hurts not only Lizzi and her family but a whole community.

Agree agree agree agree

where is the "Report As Offensive" button?!
SMK October 17, 2012 at 01:17 PM
Well said Christine! Like many others, I am horrified and ashamed that our own community news would choose to repost this tabloid story from an un-named source. Lizzi is not here to defend herself, so the only other person(s) who know what really happened were involved in her murder and are trying to reduce their charge - think about the credibility of the "source!" I have lost all respect for the Westborough Patch. Have some compassion for her family, friends, and community who are trying to grieve and reomve this article!
kate f October 17, 2012 at 02:48 PM
Agree totally with every single one of the Westborough Patch readers or former readers......Are you serious?? This is a family friendly 'newsy' medium...this is what you CHOSE to report about on your 'paper'..? The person that let this 'news' go forward on the Westborough Patch is very, very immature and obviously has NO taste or respect, as where are the 'reports' coming from?? Her killer?? I am not being naive, I am being dismayed at such poor decision making from this Patch.
Westborough resident October 17, 2012 at 03:43 PM
Agree completely, this 'community newpaper' is not in any way a true representation of our community. Do these stories get any kind of approval through an editor? Tabloid reporting...
samantha loo October 17, 2012 at 05:34 PM
This is such a tragic story for our community, and my heart goes out to the family, but we can't expect The Patch to hold back on details as they emerge! cmon. The Metrowest news had it in big letters in their headline! I for one want to know what happened. this is already all over the news, so i'd like to be able to come to my Patch and read about it.
TBH October 17, 2012 at 06:40 PM
Samantha, FYI the metrowest news and the Patch are one in the same....no surprise that they plastered it on their front page. Actually, there were many news outlets that did not run with this and are to be applauded for not furthering the spread of an unsubstantiated story from an anonymous source. The Patch is in essence, her family's hometown newspaper. I for one, would have hoped for more journalistic integrity, discretion and compassion.
Barbara Richmond October 17, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Bravo, Christine. Well said, and wise.
susan October 17, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Except reports based on unnamed sources will not tell you what happened. Only thing it will tell is that tabloid believers will rush to read such reports, upping the clicks to the reporting media's site.
LHR October 18, 2012 at 12:13 AM
It does look as though the Patch is responding to readers' concerns. The version of the story that is appearing now does include a mention of "involuntary" along with "sexual encounter." And the prurient angle seems toned down. Of course, I, like others who knew Lizzi, would rather not see her name connected to any of these allegations.
