FBI Report: Violent Crime is Up in Westborough

According to the FBI report, 18 violent crimes were reported in 2012.

Violent crime reported in Westborough was up by seven in 2012 after a decline in 2011, according to Westborough police and Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics.

According to the FBI report, 18 violent crimes were reported in 2012, up slightly from the 16 reported in 2010

The report does not include Westborough statistics from 2011. However, data that Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon provided to selectmen earlier this year show 11 violent crimes here in 2011.

The FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report includes information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. The information is compiled and released to the public in the fall of the year that follows the reported year.

Violent crime, as defined by the report, includes murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

The town's reported number of violent crimes puts Westborough safely in the lower end among cities and towns in the Bay State. Not surprisingly, Boston tops the list with 5,266 violent crimes, while other cities Worcester, Springfield, Brockton and New Bedford round out the top five.
