Get Ready for World Book Night April 23

The Westborough Public Library will participate in the 2014 international event.

The Westborough Public Library is proud to be one of 2,300 bookstores and libraries across America supporting World Book Night 2014. On April 23 – Shakespeare’s birthday – 25,000 volunteers will give away half a million free book in more than 6,000 towns and cities including Westborough.

The Westborough Public Library serves as a community base for local givers, receiving the books that they will be giving out and providing useful resources.

The Friends of the Library will be hosting a reception for our local givers on Sunday, April 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the library meeting room. At that time, the givers get to meet each other and pick up their boxes of books which will be delivered on or after April 23. The public and local media are welcome and encouraged to attend the reception where you will learn more about World book Night, 2014, the giver and the books they will be distributing. Refreshments will be provided.

More about World Book Night

World Book Night U.S. (WBN) is an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially-printed paperbacks to light or non-readers. Volunteer book givers help promote reading by going into communities and handing out free copies to those without means or access to a printed book.

With the organizational support of local bookstores and libraries, givers will be sharing books in locations such as hospitals, nursing homes, mass transit. food pantries, underfunded schools, and more.

This is not a random giveaway but a person to person, carefully planned outreach.

World Book Night is in its third year in the U.S., after the U.K. Launch in 2011. World Book Night U.S.’s reach includes all 50 states, Puerto Rico, USVI, and overseas military bases.

The WBN book selections are by a wide array of award-winning and best-selling adult and young adult authors, as well as classics, books in Spanish, and books in Large Print. The assortment of WBN titles is based on diversity in subject matter, age level, gender, ethnicity and geography. The books were chosen in a vote by librarians, booksellers and last year’s givers.

WBN is making a short, free, original e-book available to everyone on their website on April 23. More information, including FAQ and links to our social media-including giver experiences and photographs – at us.worldbooknight.org.
