Former Westborough Operating Engineer Passes Away

Samuel B. Hunnicutt of Centerville passed away on Feb. 27. He was 97.

Samuel B. Hunnicutt, of Centerville passed away on February 27, 2014 at the Epoch of Brewster Senior Living Center in Brewster, Massachusetts.  He was 97 years old.

Mr. Hunnicutt was born in 1916 in Walhalla, South Carolina, one of eight children in a large farming family.  He married Nina Sullivan Sparks (1915 – 1976) and had three children.  Nina was a teacher.  

Mr. Hunnicutt spent many of his early working years as a heavy equipment operator in the coal fields of West Virginia.  In 1955, he moved his family to Westborough, Massachusetts where he worked on a number of highway construction and airport expansion projects.  He was a proud member of Local 4 Operating Engineers.  He retired in the mid-1970’s and settled in Centerville where he lived until nearly the end of his life.

Mr. Hunnicutt is survived by his three children; Charles of St. Charles, Illinois; Carol Jean Flemming of Phoenix, Arizona; and Barbara Abel of Centerville, his five grandchildren; Steven Abel, Kent Flemming, Carrie Flood, David and Douglas Hunnicutt and his six great grandchildren; Delilah and Wyatt Flemming, and Anna, Charlie, Jack, and Sam Hunnicutt.

A memorial service will be held a later date in the spring.
